New South Hot Dog & Sushi
“Sushi is something very exclusive. It’s not like a McDonalds, not like a hot dog and not like a French fry. It’s very high-class cooking in Japan.” – Nobu Matsuhisa
Maybe this will continue to get easier with time. Maybe when people see how much we put into doing this and how they can benefit from being a guest we’ll be the the go-to authority for Tubesteak information. We’ve filmed in 6 states and covered 13 different hot dog heavens over the course of our first season. Hell, we didn’t have a show or let alone a baseball season when this thing started, just a column every week with some pictures of hot dogs. But we always had a dream.
Do you know who else had a dream?
Albert Toh. Albert Toh had a dream and he did what most people dream of; he quit a job he hated to pursue a career he loves.
Risky? Always. Brave? You’re damn right.
Sitting down with him and hearing his story was amazing. A couple of months ago when we heard about this sushi and hot dog combo truck roaming around Alabama we were obsessed.
Well, I was. El Jefe is just nice enough to support my crazy dreams and put a few coins in my Oscar Meyer piggy bank for missions such as these.
It’s never really about the destination as much as it is the journey. I’m sure that’s on a coffee mug somewhere. So, boil some water or fire up the grill, because this week is special.
Isn’t this a hot dog thing?
Duh. It’s a hot dog thing first and foremost. But there’s more to it once you peel away the layers, just like the meat sticks I find piled high with unique toppings, in historic locations and started by hard working people who knew the risk and reward of chasing a dream.
A quarter pound meat stick, bread and toppings was going to make or break each one of them. John Wooden once said, “Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.” Wise words for any person about to take a leap of faith in any aspect of life.
I think I’ve said enough. Enjoy this week’s epsiode of “Behind the Dish”, and then jump over to the New South Sushi and Hot Dog page on Facebook and give Albert a like.
